The Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) inked contracts worth QR7.7bn (about $2.11bn) for the expansion of electricity networks with a number of local and international companies to implement the Phase 11 of ‘Qatar Power Transmission System Expansion Plan’.
In a press statement, Kahramaa said that the contracts were signed by the Minister of Energy and Industry, H E Dr Mohamed bin Saleh Al Sada, with representatives of each company that have been selected to carry out these projects in the presence of Essa bin Hilal Al Kuwari, President of Kahramaa and other dignitaries.
All the projects falling under phase 11 are vital and important for the country as it includes construction of sub-stations, laying of high voltage cables and dismantling of few OHLs at major infrastructure-oriented projects of the country across the capital city and suburbs such as New Doha Ports, Doha Rail and Metro projects and Qatar 2022 projects among others.
Dr Al Sada said that the signing of such vital contracts aim at keeping pace with the rapid development in Qatar and to meet the growing needs and demands of electricity.
The upcoming projects involve contractors and consultants for transmission and distribution (T&D) infrastructure development to implement through appropriate international and local private EPC participation. The EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) contracts for Phase 11 are for the supply and commissioning of transmission lines and substations along with dismantling of few over head lines (OHL).
The contractors who signed the contracts with Kahramaa are Elsewedy Cables, Gulfar Al Misnad, LS Cable, NCC, PRYSMIAN POWERLINK, Siemens AG & Siemens WLL consortium, ETA Star International, ABB LLC, Taihan Electric wire, Energoprojeck Entel, Larsen& Toubro, Mott MacDonald and Alstom. Kahramaa also signed a contract with Qatar International Cable Co (QICC) for the supply of cables.
The contract signed between Qatar International Cable Co and Kahramaa is for the stage 2 of the Phase 11 expansion and development program of Qatar’s electricity network.
Kahramaa also entered into an agreement for consultancy services for stage 1 of Phase 11 include EDF and Alsotm Grid SAS while consultancy services for the second stage of the Phase 11 are yet to be awarded.
The contracts of the first stage of this phase will facilitate commissioning of total 32 substations comprising 26 main substations and six framework substations. Apart from it, a total 948.6km (main and framework) cables will be laid and 43km of OHLs will be dismantled.
The contracts of second stage of phase 11 will facilitate commissioning of total 20 substations comprising 14 main substations and six framework substations. Apart from it, total 82.1km (main and framework) cables will be laid and 54.5km of OHLs will be dismantled. All of the contracts are likely to be completed from 16 to 44 months from EDC.
The Minister called on companies to be an active partner in achieving the progress the state is now witnessing, emphasizing the importance of cooperation and to work hard for the implementation of these contracts. He urged all the firms to redouble their efforts to achieve the Qatar National Vision 2030 each in their respective fields and specialization.
Kahramaa has spent more than QR60bn in the last five years on development projects and expansion of electricity and water networks.
Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Al Kuwari said that the signing of contracts is in line with Kahramaa’s mission and objectives to provide high quality electricity and water services in the state and in line with Qatar National Vision 2030 and National Development Strategy 2011-2016.
