Minister of Health Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah signed a series of contracts worth SR 1.18 billion related to the establishment of new medical centers and expansion of the existing facilities at King Fahd Medical City (KFMC). The projects include the establishment of a comprehensive cancer center, a neurosciences center, lab building, a center for stem cell research and associated administrative offices and expansion of Prince Salman Cardiac Center.

The minister, meanwhile, sponsored the signing ceremony of another contract for the establishment of a center for treatment by using particles at a cost amounting to SR 277.61 million, the Saudi Press Agency reported. The comprehensive cancer center is a 238-bed, 11-story building and composed of 80 units and training facilities. The neurosciences center is an 11-story building and will have 10 specialized operation rooms in addition to 40-bed neuro intensive care units and another 316-bed neuro research lab center. The expansion works at Prince Salman Cardiac Center will include construction of more cardiac surgery patient rooms, medical education and training theaters, and a rehabilitation center.

Commenting on the projects, KFMC Executive Director Abdullah bin Sulaiman Al-Amri said the projects fall within the strategic plans of KFMC up to the year 2026, as it plans to be the national reference base by 2013 in terms of the quality of health services provided to patients and a regional base by 2016.
Within its set strategy, KFMC is working to raise health levels of citizens, work out high standards for practicing medicine, diagnose and treat complicated medical cases referred to it by other hospitals and medical centers, and develop human resources through education and training, he was quoted by SPA as saying.
