According to data compiled by the Association of Car Importers in Lebanon, the number of newly registered cars stood at 16,850 in the first six months of 2012, up by 10.8% from a total of 15,211 cars recorded a year earlier. During the month of June 2012, newly registered cars totaled 3,432, down by 1.2% from 3,474 in June 2011.
Korea’s Kia ranked first in terms of new car registration during the first six months of 2012 with a total of 4,810 cars, against a total of 4,037 during the same period of last year. It was followed by Japan’s Nissan with 2,972 newly registered cars in the first six months of 2012, against 2,606 cars recorded in the same period of last year.
Korea’s Hyundai came third with a total of 2,895 newly registered cars in the first six months of 2012, higher than the total of 2,467 cars registered a year earlier. Fourth was Japan’s Toyota with 860 newly registered cars in the aforementioned period of this year, compared to a total of 678 cars recorded in the same period of last year. The United States’ Chevrolet ranked fifth with 698 newly registered cars in the first half of 2012, versus a total of 586 cars posted in the same period of last year.
A breakdown by continent shows that 7,707 newly registered cars came from Korea in the first six months of 2012, up by 18.5% from the same period of last year. Those from Japan amounted to 4,688 cars in the aforesaid period of this year, up by 2.4% from 4,577 cars a year earlier. They were followed by European cars with a total of 3,280 vehicles, up by 2.6% from 3,198 recorded a year earlier. Then came those from the US with 1,023 vehicles, up by 24.3% from the total of 823 cars recorded in the first six months of 2011.
