The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources (MAFWR) in Oman is prioritizing sustainable agriculture, food security, and pest control through a series of impactful initiatives. These efforts include partnerships with the private sector to increase agricultural production and ensure long-term resource sustainability in the region.
In a push to boost agricultural output, MAFWR has provided farmers with extensive seedling support, distributing 41,000 Omani lemon seedlings, 25,000 mango seedlings, and numerous guava, fig, papaya, coconut, sidr, and pomegranate seedlings. Date farming also received a major boost, with over 27,000 date palm offshoots slated for distribution in 2024 across 270 acres. Nakheel Oman Development Company further contributes with 500,000 date palms across 11 farms in six governorates, producing high-quality dates under the brands “Tamrah,” “Nizwa,” and “Zad” and operating a tissue culture lab to ensure crop quality.
In wheat farming, Oman expanded cultivation to over 8,940 acres last year, producing 11,600 tonnes of wheat across 17 varieties to enhance resilience. The Ministry has also introduced grape fields and launched olive farming projects, distributing 10,000 olive cuttings and establishing a local olive oil extraction unit.
Pest control has seen major advancements with the use of drones and helicopters in extensive spraying efforts against agricultural pests such as the red palm weevil. Regulatory updates in pesticide and fertilizer licensing and extensive farm inspections uphold high standards across the sector. In line with Oman Vision 2040, these initiatives are helping shape a resilient and prosperous agricultural future for Oman.
