Oman has seen a notable increase in food production over the past five years. The country is currently developing 137 food projects with a total investment of OMR 1.6 billion ($4.2 billion), according to a local media report.
As part of these efforts, the government has launched initiatives such as agricultural cities and comprehensive agricultural plans to tackle land-related challenges, the Oman Daily Observer reported, citing Dr. Saud bin Hamoud Al Habsi, the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources.
These projects are expected to produce a combined total of 852,000 tonnes of agricultural and fisheries products. Between 2019 and 2024, food production in Oman has increased from 3.9 million to 4.7 million tonnes, according to Al Habsi.
He also highlighted the government’s proactive strategy in maintaining strategic reserves of essential commodities to mitigate the effects of global economic crises. Additionally, the ministry is working with other government agencies to establish food security laboratories and promote public-private partnerships within the food sector, the report added.
