Oman’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources has announced a tender for consultancy services to design and supervise drainage channels at the Al-Khawd Recharge Dam, according to Zawya.
The tender, issued on September 9, 2024, calls for bids from consultancy firms, with a submission deadline set for October 20, 2024. This project is part of a larger initiative aimed at reducing flooding risks, following the damages inflicted by Cyclone Gonu. A feasibility study conducted after the cyclone recommended enhancements to the Al-Khawd Recharge Dam and the establishment of a comprehensive flood protection system, which includes drainage channels and three additional dams.
The consultancy services will entail creating detailed designs, drafting tender documents, and overseeing the construction of protective walls and culverts to effectively manage water flow.
The designs for the three protective dams have been finalized:
- Al Khawd Dam (AK01): This large dam, with a capacity of 77 million cubic meters, is intended to regulate the middle course of Wadi Samail and safeguard Al Khawd village.
- Nafah Dam (NA01): With a capacity of 42.6 million cubic meters, this dam is responsible for managing water flow from Wadi Mansah, an important tributary of Wadi Samail.
- Multaqa Dam (ML01-2): Situated on Wadi Jaylay, this dam will have a storage capacity of 20 million cubic meters.
Engineering firms that have acquired bid documents include Renardet SA and Partners Consulting Engineers, AZD Engineering Consultancy, Artelia Muscat Engineering Consultancy, Atlas International Engineering Consultants, Al Manarah Engineering Consultancy, Arq and Partners Consulting Engineers, Modon Engineering, VIA International Engineering Consultancy, and Alsas Engineering Consultancy and Services. The final date to purchase these documents is September 29, 2024.
This project highlights Oman’s dedication to enhancing its water management infrastructure and bolstering its resilience against extreme weather events.
