Salalah – The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources (MAFWR) has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding turmeric farming in Dhofar, addressing recent discussions on social media and emphasizing its support initiatives for local farmers, Muscat Daily reported.
Over the past three years, turmeric cultivation in Dhofar has grown significantly, yielding a total of 136 tonnes. In collaboration with Nakheel Oman Development Company, MAFWR has ensured market stability by purchasing the entire turmeric crop from farmers, guaranteeing fair returns. Additionally, farmers have benefited from modern irrigation systems, high-quality turmeric seeds, and improved packaging materials under the ministry’s support program.
To further boost production, MAFWR recently launched an initiative to expand turmeric cultivation into new areas.
Expanding Cultivation and Farmer Participation
During the initial phase, 60 farmers across 12 villages in Salalah, Taqah, Dhalkhut, and Rakhyut cultivated turmeric on over half a hectare of land, producing six tonnes of organic turmeric. The second phase has since broadened participation to 55 farmers from 25 villages, increasing cultivation to 1.6 hectares.
To assist farmers, the ministry has provided turmeric roots, advanced irrigation systems, and technical support through agricultural teams who oversee cultivation practices. The turmeric growing season in Dhofar begins in June and lasts six to eight months, with the second phase expected to yield around 25 tonnes of fresh turmeric.
Training, Market Development, and Food Security
In addition to direct farming support, MAFWR has organized training workshops and promotional exhibitions to enhance market exposure and strengthen farmers’ expertise. These efforts align with Oman’s broader agricultural strategy, which prioritizes crop diversification, food self-sufficiency, and the development of a genetic bank for turmeric.
Through these initiatives, MAFWR underscores its dedication to empowering local farmers, increasing agricultural output, and strengthening Oman’s food security.
