Oman is enhancing its food security by establishing three Agricultural Cities, an initiative led by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources. These cities will focus on innovative and sustainable agriculture, utilizing modern techniques like hydroponics and aeroponics. Strategic locations being evaluated include Saham in North Batinah, Dhahirah, and the Najd region in Dhofar. Initial detailed planning has begun for two sites: one in Saham and another in Thumrait. These projects are seen as key to addressing the food security challenges posed by climate change and global disruptions.
Oman’s agriculture and fisheries sector has also seen substantial growth, contributing 2.4% to the GDP in the first half of 2024, with a 6.6% growth rate year-on-year. The country recently ranked 35th globally in the Global Food Security Index, marking a significant achievement.
