The Sultanate of Oman has witnessed remarkable expansion in its road network, driven by initiatives from the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology. A comprehensive system of modern highways has been developed in line with the latest international standards.
Yousef Abdullah Al Mejaini, Director General of Roads and Land Transport at the Ministry, announced that several projects under the current five-year plan are slated for execution in 2025. He highlighted the economic, tourism, and logistical importance of these road projects in supporting economic diversification efforts.
In 2024, the Ministry, in coordination with the Tender Board, awarded over OMR 300 million worth of road projects across all governorates. Key projects include the dualization of Sultan Said bin Taimur (Adam–Thumrait) Road, covering three sections from the Wilayat of Haima to the Wilayat of Thumrait. This project, featuring safety measures like steel barricades and box culverts, has been awarded to three contractors, with construction expected to begin in the first quarter of this year.
Other major projects include:
- Al Batinah Coastal Road (Sultan Taimur bin Faisal Road): Ongoing work is progressing as planned.
- Dibba-Lima-Khasab Road (Sultan Faisal bin Turki Road): Located in Musandam Governorate, this strategic project is approximately 27% complete, with all service roads now open to traffic.
- Al Sharqiyah Expressway (Sultan Turki bin Said Road): Balance works are 20% complete, with design work for the Wadi Bani Khalid Road expected to conclude within six months.
- Al Batinah Expressway Connection: The road linking Al Batinah Main Road with Al Batinah Expressway is 90% complete, with all sections anticipated to be finished by the second half of the year.
By the end of 2024, the total length of paved roads in Oman reached 16,000 kilometers, with an additional 17,000 kilometers planned for completion in the future.
