Orascom Construction has announced the commencement of commercial operations for the first 306-megawatt (MW) phase of the Ras Ghareb wind farm, according to a company statement.
The remaining capacity of the wind farm will be connected to Egypt’s national grid in stages, with full completion expected by the third quarter of 2025. Once finalized, the Ras Ghareb wind farm will become the largest renewable energy project of its kind in the Middle East and Africa.
This first phase is part of the expanded 650 MW Build-Own-Operate (BOO) Ras Ghareb wind farm, developed by the Red Sea Wind Energy consortium. The consortium includes ENGIE (35%), Orascom Construction (25%), and Toyota Tsusho Corporation and Eurus Energy Holdings Corporation (20% each).
The project’s first phase began commercial operations four months ahead of schedule, exceeding contractual targets by 56 MW.
When fully operational, the wind farm will provide clean energy to over 1 million homes and cut carbon emissions by approximately 1.3 million tonnes annually.
