Passenger traffic at Doha International Airport rose 22% to 8.5 million in the first five months of 2012, from 7 million in the same period a year ago, state-run Qatar News Agency reported, fueled by the growth of its national airline. Government-backed flag carrier, Qatar Airways, has expanded fast over the last few years as Doha tries to build an aviation hub to rival Dubai.
By contrast, passenger volumes at Dubai International, the biggest regional transport hub, rose 14% in the first six months of year to nearly 28 million. Eyeing further growth, both Dubai and Doha are building new airports, which are likely to open in 2013 for passengers.
Aircraft movements in Doha between January to May 2012 increased 17% on the year to 62,757.
