ALEC has unveiled its groundbreaking Robotics Strategy during the annual Innovation Day event in Dubai, marking a bold shift towards automation and technology-driven construction. This initiative forms a key pillar of ALEC’s broader Innovation Agenda, aiming to revolutionize core construction processes and elevate industry standards across the Middle East.
Transforming Construction Through Robotics
The strategy focuses on integrating cutting-edge robotics into ALEC’s operations, reshaping how construction is executed in the region. Barry Lewis, CEO of ALEC, highlighted the critical role of automation in addressing industry challenges:
“As one of the largest employers globally, the construction industry faces significant challenges. At ALEC, we recognize the need to incorporate robotics into our operations and collaborate with industry stakeholders. Increased automation across the sector will enhance sustainability, address skilled labor shortages, and ensure projects meet tight deadlines.”
Building on a Strong Foundation
The Robotics Strategy builds upon ALEC’s Robotics Brief launched in 2017, which has already facilitated the deployment of nine innovative robotics solutions. Going forward, ALEC plans to evaluate up to 20 new robotics ideas and partnerships annually, collaborating with government bodies, universities, and tech companies.
The company aims to automate 5% of its construction activities over the next five years by deploying mature robotics technologies. The first phase will focus on integrating ready-to-deploy robotics while supporting the development of emerging solutions. Several of these technologies were showcased at Innovation Day.
Showcasing Global Robotics Innovations
Innovation Day featured 14 global leaders in construction robotics, including:
- NYU Abu Dhabi’s AI and robotics solutions for autonomous data collection in construction.
- HILTI’s Jaibot, a semi-automated robot for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and interior finishing tasks.
- Construction Robotics’ MULE, a lift-assist robot designed for heavy material handling.
- Angelswing’s drone-based digital twin platform for enhanced project planning and management.
These demonstrations highlighted the transformative potential of robotics to enhance efficiency, safety, and sustainability in construction.
Driving Efficiency, Sustainability, and Innovation
Imad Itani, Head of Innovation at ALEC, emphasized the convergence of market shifts, environmental considerations, and technological advancements as key drivers of change:
“At the intersection of market demand, environmental responsibility, and rapid technological progress lies a significant opportunity for the construction sector. ALEC is at the forefront of this transformation, embedding innovation into the very DNA of our organization.”
He added:
“Through detailed frameworks and clear milestones, we are committed to continuous improvement. As the region’s leading construction firm, our success will demonstrate the value and feasibility of adopting new approaches. We will continue to partner with the world’s best talent to deliver cutting-edge solutions and exceed stakeholder expectations.”
A Vision for the Future
With its Robotics Strategy, ALEC is positioning itself as a leader in construction automation, blending innovation, sustainability, and global collaboration. By addressing industry challenges head-on, ALEC aims to set a new benchmark for the construction industry in the Middle East and beyond, paving the way for a more efficient, sustainable, and technology-driven future.
