Qatar is an ideal place to discuss production optimization and how to meet global energy demand, Rich Kruger, president of ExxonMobil Production Company, said. “Nowhere is the success of national and international oil company (IOC) partnerships more evident than in Qatar, where Qatar Petroleum has partnered with ExxonMobil, and with more than a dozen other IOCs and petrochemical companies,” he said at the 2012 SPE International Production and Operations Conference and Exhibition in Doha.
All of these collaborations have delivered significant benefits to the people of Qatar, the foreign investors and their shareholders, and to people all over the world with new, reliable energy supplies.
“From a personal perspective, I appreciate that producing oil and gas in a safe, reliable and environmentally responsible way, each and every day, takes unwavering commitment, focus and a tremendous amount of effort by all involved,” said Kruger. Producers must understand and manage operating risks while striving to maximize the value of the resources.
ExxonMobil calls the concept of managing risks while maximizing value “focusing on the fundamentals” – the fundamentals of safety, reliability, operations integrity and efficiency. These fundamentals hinge on effective risk management, Kruger said.
“We believe that effective risk management is essential to deliver results that the host governments, our partners and society overall expects from us. While our industry recognises the importance of risk management and operational integrity, operational incidents around the world continue to reinforce the need to improve.
“If we don’t ensure integrity, we put peoples’ lives, the environment, shareholders’ assets and each of our individual and collective reputations at risk,” Kruger said. “What I’ve learned throughout my 30-year career is that integrity – be it technical, operational or personal – must serve as the core of how we go about our business. The way to underpin operations integrity is through having the right equipment, processes and people in place to prevent undesired events.
“Investment, technology, teamwork, and a commitment to operations integrity have placed Qatar in an enviable position as the world’s largest supplier of LNG, diversifying the global energy portfolio and strengthening energy security in Europe, Asia and beyond,” he said.
“As the largest US investor in Qatar, ExxonMobil is proud to partner with Qatar and QP. Our challenge is to take the lessons learned from what Qatar has accomplished and apply them around the world,” Kruger added.
