Saudi Arabia’s entertainment parks sector is undergoing rapid expansion, driven by national initiatives aimed at diversifying the economy and establishing the Kingdom as a premier global entertainment hub, according to Arabian Business.
A report by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) reveals a strong appetite for theme and water parks among Saudi residents, with two-thirds expressing a keen interest in visiting such attractions. This enthusiasm is fueling significant development, with plans for over 10 new parks designed to cater to both local and international visitors.
A Bold Vision for Saudi Arabia’s Theme Park Industry
Devanshu Mathur, Managing Director and Partner at BCG, described the upcoming projects as a major step forward, noting that demand for theme and water parks in Saudi Arabia is exceptionally high. “With over 10 new parks in the works, many in collaboration with leading global brands, the Kingdom is setting the stage for world-class entertainment experiences,” he said.
The global theme park industry, currently valued at approximately $70 billion, is expected to grow at a 5% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over the next decade. Industry trends, including immersive and gamified experiences, as well as intellectual property (IP) partnerships, are shaping the future of entertainment parks worldwide—strategies that Saudi Arabia is actively incorporating into its entertainment ecosystem.
Global Trends Driving Saudi Arabia’s Approach
Saudi Arabia is aligning its developments with evolving global trends, such as IP-themed hospitality, which has grown at a 20% CAGR over the past two decades. This approach enhances visitor experiences by integrating entertainment with retail, dining, and accommodation options.
BCG’s survey data supports this shift, with 40% of respondents expressing interest in staying overnight at nearby hotels after a full day at a theme park. By leveraging strategic partnerships and diversifying offerings, Saudi Arabia is positioning itself as a top-tier destination for theme park enthusiasts.
Major Projects Shaping the Future
Upcoming attractions like Six Flags Qiddiya and Aquarabia are expected to set new regional benchmarks, offering a mix of thrilling rides, immersive experiences, and extensive hospitality options. These developments aim to attract both domestic and international visitors, reinforcing Saudi Arabia’s ambitions to become a key player in the global entertainment landscape.
Unlocking Economic Potential and Expanding Access
BCG’s report highlights the immense potential of Saudi Arabia’s entertainment sector, driven by strong local demand and a growing preference for in-country attractions. Despite rapid development, some regions remain underserved, presenting an opportunity to expand accessibility and further strengthen the Kingdom’s position in the industry.
Mathur emphasized the growth momentum, citing survey data that shows 90% of respondents would visit a theme or water park at least once a year if available in their city, while 67% expressed willingness to visit multiple times.
“This trajectory is set to boost economic growth, stimulate domestic tourism, and solidify Saudi Arabia’s status as a leading leisure destination, offering unmatched experiences for a diverse and expanding audience,” Mathur concluded.
