Sidra Medicine, part of Qatar Foundation, has introduced the Autism-Friendly Hospital Initiative (AFHI) to create a more inclusive and supportive healthcare setting for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The initiative addresses key challenges children with ASD often face during hospital visits—such as sensory sensitivities, communication difficulties, and anxiety—which can impact the quality of care they receive.
Dr. Finza Latif, Senior Attending Physician and Fellowship Programme Director at Sidra Medicine, explained:
“We launched this initiative to better support children with ASD in medical environments. Between 2023 and 2024, we recorded a 14% rise in ASD-related admissions, underlining the need for more tailored care. By reducing sensory and communication barriers, we aim to create a safe and comforting space where every child can receive the care they deserve.”
As part of the programme, parents are encouraged to share information about their child’s specific sensory and communication needs. This data becomes part of the child’s medical file, allowing healthcare providers to deliver personalized care. Tools such as sensory kits, visual aids, picture boards, and communication apps are used to help children express themselves more easily.
Sidra Medicine also provides autism-awareness training for its entire care team—including doctors, nurses, and support staff. An autism programme specialist oversees staff training and coordinates care to ensure consistency and effectiveness across departments.
Prof. Muhammad Waqar Azeem, Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at Sidra Medicine, highlighted some of the initiative’s practical features:
“From designated blood draw days with trained staff to sensory-friendly toolkits and priority pharmacy services, every aspect of the patient experience has been designed to reduce stress. We’ve even introduced dedicated parking for families to make hospital visits smoother and more accessible.”
The AFHI team is led by Prof. Azeem, Dr. Latif, Dr. Alia Satti, and Enas Hasab El Naby (Programme Specialist). The model was inspired by a successful program at Boston Medical Center and was customized for Sidra Medicine through parent focus groups and staff feedback.
This initiative marks a major step forward in inclusive healthcare, ensuring children with ASD and their families feel supported, respected, and understood throughout their medical journey.
