Siemens , the global powerhouse in electronics and electrical engineering operating in the energy, infrastructure, industry and healthcare sectors, has announced that it has signed a deal with independent power producer KAR Construction and Engineering Company Ltd to supply turbines, generators and ancillary systems to the new Khormala power plant near Erbil, Iraq, that will deliver electricity to more than four million people in the region.
Under the contract Siemens will supply four SGT5-2000E gas turbines and four SGen5-100A generators, along with associated auxiliary and ancillary systems, to the Erbil-based KAR Construction and Engineering Company Ltd, which is building the Khormala facility. The four-unit gas turbine power plant is located 25 kilometers south of Erbil, the region's capital, which falls under the administrative authority of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

With an installed electrical generating capacity of 640 megawatts (MW) – enough to meet roughly one quarter of the region's power demand – Khormala will be the first major power plant project for KAR Group, which will also operate the facility.
