The Iraqi Ministry of Transport has reported a growing influx of international investment in the country’s strategic transport initiatives.
Boosted by improved investment conditions and government policies, 2025 is expected to witness a surge in foreign direct investment, according to the Ministry. Key projects attracting global interest include the Grand Faw Port, where 11 shortlisted companies are competing for operational contracts, along with major upgrades to Baghdad International Airport. Additionally, plans for a Karbala-Najaf monorail and several airport developments are progressing.
Major Transport Projects and International Investors:
- Mosul International Airport – Being developed by Turkey’s TAV – 77 Insaat JV, a joint venture between TAV Construction and 77 Construction (77 Insaat).
- Nasiriyah International Airport – Under construction by a Turkish firm, with design and consultancy by Kiklop Design Hertz Insaat and an annex contract for construction with China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC).
- Al Faw Grand Port – Led by South Korea’s Daewoo, with contributions from Italian, Dutch, and Turkish consultants.
- Development Road Project – Managed by US-based Oliver Wyman (financial consultancy) and Italian engineering firm BTP.
- Basra-Shalamcheh Rail Line – Constructed by Spain’s Imathia.
- Sawa-Hijama Rail Line – Developed by Iran’s Boland Payeh (Balandbayeh).
The Ministry aims to position Iraq as a global economic hub by integrating its infrastructure with regional and international networks. By connecting the Grand Faw Port to Turkey, Iraq seeks to capitalize on its strategic location and natural resources, strengthening economic ties between the Middle East and Europe.
