Oman’s Nama Power and Water Procurement Company (Nama PWP) has revealed that prominent utility developers, including Saudi Arabia’s Acwa Power, Japan’s Sumitomo and Itochu, France’s TotalEnergies and EDF, as well as the UAE’s Masdar, have been shortlisted for five large-scale wind energy projects.
As the sole procurer of power and water in Oman, Nama PWP stated that these projects, spanning several key governorates, mark a critical step in the sultanate’s push to meet its renewable energy targets and move towards a low-carbon economy.
These wind Independent Power Projects (IPPs) will contribute to Oman’s goal of generating 30% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and bolstering energy security.
Nama PWP has been leading efforts to diversify Oman’s energy portfolio by organizing competitive tenders for renewable energy, focusing on both solar and wind. The five large-scale wind projects include:
In the Main Interconnection System (MIS):
- Jalan Bani Bu Ali Wind IPP in South Sharqiyah Governorate, with a capacity of 91-105 MW, scheduled for commercial operation in Q1 2027.
- Duqm Wind IPP at Ras Madrakah in Duqm, with a capacity of 234-270 MW, expected to begin operation in Q4 2027.
- Mahoot Wind I IPP in Al Wusta Governorate, with a capacity of 342-400 MW, set for Q4 2027.
In the Dhofar Power System (DPS) in Dhofar Governorate:
- Dhofar Wind II IPP, adjacent to the existing Dhofar Wind I IPP in Shaleem and Al Hallaniyat Islands, with a capacity of 114-132 MW, projected for Q2 2027.
- Sadah Wind IPP, with a capacity of 81-99 MW, expected to start operations in Q4 2027.
Nama PWP expressed enthusiasm over the strong interest shown by major developers. The qualified bidders include Acwa Power, Sembcorp, Sumitomo, Itochu, TotalEnergies, Masdar, Al Fanar, EDF Renouvelables, Elecnor, Goldwind, GED and Marafiq, and Hero Asia Investment.
